Delivered and Translated

The Lord’s Doings – Marvelous in Our Eyes

“Who has delivered us from the power of darkness, and translated us into the Kingdom of His Dear Son” (Colossians 1:13).

Man cannot deliver himself. In fact, man is dead in his sins and does not, and will not, seek God on his own. These are strong words but they are true. Man will not seek God without the Holy Spirit convicting him of his sin, and lost state, and drawing him to the Lord. This is what our introductory verse is talking about.

We are delivered from our lost state and the powers of darkness that control this world and are translated us into the Kingdom of God. This is done through the hearing of the Gospel and with us agreeing with what God says about us. God’s Word tells us that we are sinners and lost prior to coming to the Lord. Our Salvation is the result of Christ’s sacrificial death at Calvary. Christ is source and the Cross is the means.

Well, what does it mean that Christ is the source and the Cross is the means. The Father sent His Son to die on the Cross to pay the sin debt for man and open the way to a relationship with Him through the born again experience. When Christ suffered death on the Cross and rose from the dead, this allowed the Holy Spirit to come and reside in all born again believers.

The Holy Spirit baptizes us into Christ as Romans chapter 6 tells us. This is a spiritual baptism into Christ.  We are then recipients of “Newness of Life” and the Holy Spirit guides us and teaches us. Upon coming to the Lord, the following takes place:

“…But you are washed, but you are sanctified, but you are justified in the Name of the Lord Jesus, and by the Spirit of our God” (1 Corinthians 6:11).

We were washed meaning we were cleansed from our sin by the Blood of Jesus, we were sanctified which means we are set apart and reflects our position in Christ, and we are justified which means we are declared not guilty and walk in the imputed Righteousness of God. All made possible by what Christ accomplished at Calvary. This is superintendent by the Holy Spirit Who, as has been said, baptizes us into Christ at conversion and indwells all believers.

We are so blessed to know our great God. He did not leave us in our fallen state. He reached down in His great love for us and made a way for “whosoever will” to come to Him. He delivered us from evil, the power of darkness, and translated us into the “Kingdom of His Dear Son.” We have much to be grateful for. We entered a new day on the first Pentecost when the church was born – the Holy Spirit coming in power. He now points all those who will harken to the clarion call to the Gospel of God’s Grace. All the blessings from the Lord come to us at great cost to the Lord. We stand in awe of the love for us that was displayed at Calvary.

This is the Lord’s doing; it is marvelous in our eyes” (Psalm 118:23).
