In Christ and Walking After the Spirit

“There is therefore no condemnation to them which are in Christ Jesus, Who walk not after the flesh, but after the Spirit” (Romans 8:1).
Our introductory verse is telling us that there is no condemnation (guilt) for those who have placed their faith in Christ and His sacrificial death at Calvary. It is also telling us that, when we have are faith properly placed in Christ both for Salvation and our daily Christian walk; we are walking after the Spirit which is the way that we are to walk out our lives. As we will see, this is the only way to live a life pleasing to the Lord, and it is the only way to walk in victory.
The Apostle Paul, in the previous chapter of Romans (chapter7), showed us what happened in his own life when he did not understand how to live for the Lord. After becoming a Christian, he experienced failure because he was attempting to walk after the Lord by obeying the Law. Many think that once we come to the Lord, the Lord gives us a stronger willpower, and that we are able to then keep the Commandments of the Lord. As Paul found out; this is an error and will only result in failure.
Paul closes chapter 7 by admitting that that this is a defeated and miserable way of life. In going the way of self effort, we will live a life of defeat and discouragement. He proposes the following question “Who will rescue me from the this body of death?” The Bible tells us that the body is dead due to sin. In other words, the body stands helpless due to the Fall. There is no power in ourselves to obey the Lord and live a victorious life. Paul realizes this and in the next verse gives us the answer. He says “I thank God through Jesus Christ.” Paul realized that deliverance from sin, and the ability to live a life pleasing to the Lord, comes only through faith in Christ and Him crucified.
The will is important, but not as most think. We are to choose to place our faith in Christ which will guarantee our victory. The way of the flesh is the way of self-will and self-effort and is displeasing to the Lord and will lead to a life devoid of any victory. As our introductory verse tells us, we can know that being “in Christ” there is no condemnation, no guilt. The term “in Christ” is used by Paul many times in his epistles and always points to having our faith placed and anchored in Christ and His sacrificial death at The Cross.
There are two most powerful laws in the universe, the Law of Sin and Death, and the Law of the Spirit of Life in Christ Jesus. The later is the most powerful, and the only way to overcome living life under the power of sin and death. If we attempt to live this Christian life in any way other than faith in Christ and His sacrificial death at Calvary, it will result in failure.
By placing our faith in Christ, it allows the Holy Spirit to working mightily in our lives bringing us the victory we seek. The Holy Spirit is the Power source, our faith in Christ and Him crucified is the means of this victory. The Holy Spirit works in no other way. All blessings, all victory, comes through the Cross. It’s the Lord’s prescribed way and a Law of God.
For the Law of the Spirit of Life in Christ Jesus has made me free from the Law of Sin and Death” (Romans 8:2).
