The Great Commission

“In those days John the Baptist came preaching in the wilderness of Judea, and saying, Repent, for the Kingdom of Heaven is at hand! For this is He ( John the Baptist) who was spoken of by the Prophet Isaiah: saying, The voice of one crying in the wilderness: Prepare the way of the Lord, make His path straight” (Matthew 3:2,3).

The Bible tells us that John the Baptist went before the Lord preparing His way. He preached repentance to all those that would listen. He preached in the wilderness of Judea saying “Repent for the kingdom of Heaven is at hand.” Many came to him at the Jordan River, confessed their sins, and were baptized.

Israel was being offered the Kingdom of Heaven. John, as the forerunner of Christ, was preparing Israel for the arrival of their Messiah to “make His path straight.”

I was reminded of the words of Isaiah in our title several years ago while attending a country fair. I was there to set up a booth at the fair for our company. There were many people walking about as I entered the fairgrounds. All of a sudden, out of nowhere, I felt great sorrow and loneliness. I couldn’t understand why I felt this way; there was nothing going on in my life that might cause such feelings. In fact, I was looking forward to the days ahead. I’ll never forget what happened next. The Lord brought to mind those words from Isaiah “The voice of one crying in the wilderness.”

I believe that the Lord was showing me that the Great Commission was just like John the Baptist’s arrival on the scene announcing the Kingdom of Heaven. There is a great sadness for the world today when we see the need of all those we come across that do not know the Lord and the life only the Lord can provide for them; there is a sadness or crying out in our spirit for all those that do not know the Way.

This world is a wilderness to those that do not know the Lord. It is a fallen world inhabited by a fallen race with sin dominating the vast majority of those in the world. It is truly a wilderness that can only be changed by the power of the Gospel.

As we walk out this life serving Him and sharing the Gospel, we are crying out to a lost and dying world. Great sadness can be felt by us because of the lost condition of those we come across. We can see it as a wilderness that is in desperate need of all the Lord offers.

So, our voice cries out to all the lost, saying “Repent for the kingdom of Heaven is at hand.” The Lord gave all those that know Him the command to reach out to all those lost in the wilderness of sin in the Great Commission as the following verses tell us:

“And Jesus came and said to them, All authority in Heaven and in earth has been given to Me. Go therefore, and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the Name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit: teaching them to observe all that I have commanded you: and behold, I am with you always, even to the end of the age. (Matthew 28:18-20).

We walk with the Lord and seek Him in all that we do. We have great joy in knowing that we know Him and He knows us. However, as we look around at those that are lost and do not know the Lord; we have great sorrow, and know that we are walking through a wilderness. We call out to all those that might listen and come into the Kingdom it cost the Lord so much to provide. He laid down His life for us that we might be forgiven, become children of God, and joint-heirs with Christ. Jesus points to the cross and acknowledges all those that receive him as friends in John chapter 15 verse 13 as follows:

“Greater love has no man than this: to lay down one’s life for one’s friends.”

The Lord’s Love Lifts Us Into His Very Presence

The following are lyrics from the song “Love Lifted Me”

I was sinking deep in sin far from the peaceful shore. Very deeply stained within, sinking to rise no more. But the master of the sea heard my despairing cry. From the waters lifted me. Now safe am I.

Love lifted me. Love lifted me. When nothing else could help. Love lifted me.

This article will be somewhat different than the ones I usually post. We will let the scriptures expound on the love the Lord has for us and how He rescued us from the fallen condition that bound us.

The Lord reached down in His love and rescued us from the sin and the sin nature which we, in ourselves, could not escape. His mercy and grace are ever there for us as we walk out of this life. Yes, the Lord loves us and we love Him because of the love he showed for us as the following verses tell us:

“We love Him because He first loved us” (1 John 4:19).

“For God so loved the world, that He gave His only Begotten Son, that whosoever believes in Him should not perish, but have everlasting life” ( John 3:16).

“Herein is love, not that we loved God, but that He loved us…” 1 John 4:10).

“Even when we were dead in sins, has quickened us together with Christ…” (Ephesians 2:5).

“Therefore we are buried with Him (Christ) by baptism unto death: that like as Christ was raised up from the dead by the glory of the Father, even so, we should walk in newness of life” (Romans 6:4).

“…. You are washed (cleansed by the Blood of Jesus), But you are sanctified (our position), but you are justified (declared not guilty by God) in the Name of the Lord Jesus, and by the Spirit of our God” (1 Corinthians 6:11).

“And has raised us up to together (with Christ), and made us sit together in Heavenly places in Christ Jesus” (Ephesians 2::6).

“…. Neither death, nor life, nor angels, nor principalities, nor powers, nor things present, nor things to come, nor height, nor depth, nor any other creature, shall be able to separate us from the love of God which is in Christ Jesus our Lord” (Romans 8:38,39).

“I have loved you with an everlasting love; therefore I have drawn you with loving-kindness” (Jeremiah 31:3).

These verses of scripture tell us that the Lord loves us and offers us forgiveness and salvation in what Jesus accomplished on the cross. The following are more lyrics from our introductory hymn, “Love Lifted Me” composed by James Rowe in 1912, and should reflect our response to a love that sent the Lord to the cross to redeem us and bring us into His very presence for eternity:

All my heart I give to Him. Ever to Him I’ll cling. In His blessed presence live and ever His praises sing.

Love lifted me. Love lifted me. When nothing else could help. Love lifted me.

So, How Did That Work Out For Them?

“…He (Jesus) was teaching His Disciples, saying unto them, The Son of Man is going to be delivered into the hands of men, and then they will kill Him. And when He is killed, after three days He will rise” (Mark 9:31).

We now go to that Sunday morning three days after the crucifixion; the tomb they had laid Jesus in was secure and guarded by soldiers sent by the religious leaders of Israel. They knew full well that Jesus had said that He would rise in three days, so they posted a secure guard to ensure that His Disciples did not come and take the body and claim that He had risen from the dead. The following verse tells of their plan to secure the Lord’s body:

“Now the next day, that followed the day of preparation (the day after the crucifixion) The Chief Priests came together unto Pilate, saying, Sir, we remember that that deceiver said, while He was yet alive, After three days I will rise again. Command therefore that the sepulcher be made sure until the third day, lest His Disciples come by night and steal Him away, and say unto the people, He is risen from the dead: so the last error shall be worse than the first. Pilate said unto them, you have a watch (continuous guard with four soldiers changed every three hours) go your way, make it as sure as ye can. So they went, and made the sepulcher sure, sealing the stone, and setting a watch” (Matthew 27:62-66).

So, the tomb was secure with a continuous presence of guards. The religious leaders thought it important enough that this be done that they went to Pilate, the Governor, and requested it. They had plotted to crucify Jesus and now they would secure His body so that His Disciples could not take the body and claim He had risen. The religious leaders thought that they had everything covered. They would finally be rid of this “deceiver” whom they had opposed and sought to destroy for the past three and one-half years. The people would forget about Him and everything would go back to the way it was before He started His ministry and caused the people to flock to Him. But their final plan to be rid of Him did not go as planned as the following verse tells us:

And, behold, there was a great earthquake: for the Angel of the Lord descended from Heaven, and came and rolled back the stone from the door, and sat upon it. His countenance was like lightning, and his raiment white as snow: and for fear of him (the angel) the keepers (guards) did shake, and become as dead men” Matthew 28:2-4).

The Angel of the Lord showed up at the tomb while the guards were standing watch to secure it. The Angel rolled back the stone and sat on it as a sign of victory. The tomb was empty for the Lord by already risen. The guards were terrified at the sight and ” became as dead men.” They had now become witnesses to the fact that Christ had indeed risen from the dead, and they had been in the presence of a powerful Angel who rolled back the stone from the entrance to the tomb to show everyone that Jesus was no longer there but had risen. The guards went to the religious leaders immediately following this incredible sight with the news that the tomb was empty. The following verse relates the conversation that took place between the guards and the religious leaders:

“….Behold, some of the watch (soldiers) came into the city, and showed unto the Chief Priests all the things that were done. And when they (Chief Priests) were assembled with the elders, and had taken counsel, they gave large money unto the soldiers, saying, you say, His Disciples came by night, and stole Him away while we slept. And if this come to the Governor’s ears, we will secure you. So they took the money, and did as they were taught: and this saying is commonly reported among the Jews until this day” Matthew 28:11-15).

There may have been some doubt previously as to what the religious leaders believed about Jesus. Did they know that He was the Messiah that Israel had waited for for so long? We have the answer to that in what took place between them and the guards. There is no doubt now that they knew Jesus was who He said He was, their Messiah, and knew now that He had risen from the dead. But instead of repentance and seeking forgiveness from the Lord for crucifying their Messiah, they hid the truth and had the guards lie about what happened. The guards took the money they offered and the religious leaders pledged to protect them if the Governor heard about their lie that the Disciples stole the body while they stood guard. This lie they fabricated has been believed even to this day among the Jews.

Jesus died to pay the sin debt owed and to offer salvation to whomsoever will come to Him in repentance and faith. Satan is a liar and a deceiver and is behind all the evil that has come upon this world since the fall of man in the Garden. The religious leaders were lifted up in pride. This is the same sin that caused Satan’s fall. Although this egregious lie that the religious leaders put forth has caused the Jewish people to believe it since that time; many of those outside of the Jewish faith since then have also been deceived by Satan and have believed the same lie, that is, that Jesus was not who He said He was and did not rise from the dead. But the truth of who Jesus is and the proof that He did rise from the dead and is alive can be seen in the testimonies of all the lives He has changed. There is only one hope for humanity and Satan knows it. It is Christ and Him crucified. The question is: Will those alive today, in a time that prophetically is what a called the “end times” see through Satan’s deceptions and embrace the truth? How did the religious leaders lie to cover up the truth regarding Jesus work out for them? I think we all know the answer to that. Sadly, as prophesied, the Roman army came in A.D.70 and destroyed Jerusalem and the temple because the Jewish nation had rejected their long-awaited Messiah.

We’ll close with a verse that tells us what happened that Sunday morning just before dawn when Mary Magdalene and the other Mary arrived at the tomb.:

“And the Angel answered and said to the women, do not fear: for I know that you seek Jesus, which was crucified. He is not here: for He has risen, as He said. Come see the place where the Lord lay” (Matthew 28:5,6).

An event unlike any other that will bring the church age to a close.

[ I wrote this article several years ago regarding the Rapture of the church which could take place at any time. This event may, or may not occur in our lifetime, but one thing is for certain: It will happen!]

“And if I go and prepare a place for you, I will come again (at the rapture of the church), and receive you unto Myself; that where I am, there you may be also” (John 14:3).

(The following is a letter that might be left for loved ones to let them know what had just taken place with the rapture of the church.)

Dear family and friends,

If you are reading this letter then you have discovered that I am missing along with millions of others. Undoubtedly, there is much confusion about the cause of this unprecedented event. I’m sure, along with the confusion, there is uncertainty and some trepidation regarding what took place and what the future may hold. I write this letter to explain to you what just happened and to give you hope for the future.

This event was an act of God and was prophesied some 2000 years ago. The Lord has come for His church (those born again). The Apostle Paul, explains it this way: “For the Lord, Himself (Jesus) shall descend from Heaven with a shout, with the voice of the Archangel, and the trump of God: and the dead in Christ shall rise first: then we which are alive shall be caught up (raptured) together with them in the clouds, to meet the Lord in the air: and so shall we ever be with the Lord.” The church has been anticipating the Rapture (i.e. being caught up to the Lord) since the first century when this promise of the Lord was given through Paul in the First Epistle to the Thessalonians. It is called the “blessed hope” in the Epistle of Paul to Titus. Titus chapter 2 verse 13 encourages all believers with the following words: “Looking for that blessed hope, and the glorious appearing of the great God and our Savior Jesus Christ.”

The world will have its own explanation for this happening. Don’t believe anything that the world comes up with to explain it away. The truth is that the Lord has removed all those that are His before the time of the Great Tribulation. Jesus said this of the time following the removal of the church: “For then shall be great tribulation, such as was not in the beginning of the world to this time, no, nor ever shall be.” No one knows how soon after the Rapture it will begin, but when it does begin, it will be the worst time the world has ever gone through. It will be a time of great destruction, and it will result in death for many that are alive at the time. It is what the Bible calls the end time and it will be a final seven-year period that will culminate with the Second Coming of the Lord Jesus.

The Bible contains prophecies that warn about, and explain, what will happen in the end time. The books of Daniel chapters 7-12, Matthew Chapter 24, and Revelation are a partial list of books containing end-time prophecies and will give some details on what lies ahead. Some very dark days are coming upon the world, but the Lord will be calling out, through His Word, to whosoever will come to Him and be saved. I write the following in love: I strongly entreat you to read your Bible. Your future eternal wellbeing depends upon it.

Through the Bible, we learn of the words of life given to us by the Lord. John 3:16 says: “For God so loved the world that He gave His only begotten Son, that whosoever believes in Him should not perish, but have eternal life.” We are sinners and have a fallen nature. We cannot save ourselves. The Lord died for our sins on the Cross and offers us eternal life as we come to Him in repentance and faith. His death on the cross paid our sin debt owed to God. Romans 10:9,10 says: “That if you will confess with your mouth the Lord Jesus (that He is Lord & Savior), and shall believe in your heart that God has raised Him from the dead (the Resurrection), you shall be saved. For with the heart, man believes unto righteousness, and with the mouth, confession is made unto salvation.” The following is the Sinner’s Prayer, which has been prayed by millions down through the years. If you pray this prayer and believe it; you have passed from death to life and have been “born again”.

Sinner’s Prayer – Dear God in Heaven, I come to You in the Name of Jesus. I’m sorry for my sins. The way I’ve lived, the things I’ve done. Please forgive me. Cleanse me with the precious Blood of Jesus from all unrighteousness. With my mouth, I confess Jesus Christ. In my heart, I believe You raised Jesus from the dead and He is alive. This very moment I accept Jesus Christ as the savior of my soul, and I make Him the Lord of my life. And according to Your Word which cannot lie, I am washed: I am cleansed, I am forgiven. I am saved. Amen.

I pray that you will heed the Lord’s warnings regarding the future and the tribulation that is about to come upon those in the world. He loves you and it’s not the Lord’s will that any should perish, but that all would come to Him in faith and receive the salvation for which He paid such a great price. We are promised no more than today. Today is the day of salvation. It is my hope that you prayed the above prayer. If you did pray and believed, according to God’s Word, you have been born from above. I look forward to meeting you on the other side – in His glorious presence.

The Parable Of The Marriage Feast

“For many are called, but few are chosen” (Matthew 22:9).

The Lord spoke these words after giving the people The Parable of the Wedding Feast. He likened the Kingdom of Heaven to a wedding feast for a king’s son. In the parable we see the king sending out his servants to call all those who were invited to the feast. But those invited (chosen) would not come. He then sent other servants to bid others to come, for everything had been prepared for the feast. But those invited made light of it and went about their business. Additionally, those refusing the invitation mistreated the king’s servants and killed them.

The Lord spoke this parable to Israel. They had been invited to take part in the marriage feast which spoke of the Kingdom of Heaven. Those the first servants were sent to represent the prophets and their Messiah, both rejected by Israel. The other servants sent could represent them being sent to His disciples and those in the early church after His crucifixion. These as well were rejected by the religious leaders of Israel and some were killed.

The parable goes on to say that when the king heard that his invitation had been refused and his servants had been mistreated and killed; the king was very angry and sent his armies and they destroyed those that murdered His servants and they burned their city.

This is exactly what happened to Israel in A.D. 70. The Romans under Titus came and completely destroyed Jerusalem and the temple. Many of the Jewish people were killed and others scattered throughout the Roman Empire. Israel as a nation ceased to exist at this time. They had rejected their Messiah and the Lord’s judgment fell because of it. Sadly, God’s chosen people refused the invitation and therefore suffered the loss of their home and more importantly the loss of the chance to see the Kingdom of Heaven come in their lifetime.

The parable goes on to say that the Lord said to his servants that all was ready for the wedding but those that were invited were not worthy. He then sent his servants to invite all they found to come to the wedding. His servants went out and gathered all, both bad and good, and the wedding feast was filled with guests.

Israel, as a whole, was deemed not worthy by the Lord, because they rejected the worthiness of Christ. The religious leadership of the nation had rejected Christ. The Lord then turned to the Gentiles and invited all those that would come, both bad and good. This is meant to show that all are in need of salvation.

The parable goes on to say that one of the guests that came to the wedding feast did not have a wedding garment on. When questioned by the king the man was speechless. The following verse in the parable is a sobering one indeed:

“Then said the king to the servants, bind him hand and foot, and take him away, and cast him into outer darkness; there shall be weeping and gnashing of teeth” Matthew 22:14).

The wedding garment represented the Righteousness of Christ. Those that would pretend to show up, or be acceptable to God in their own righteousness will not be allowed to enter but will be cast into Hell. Many are called to come into the kingdom by faith in the precious Blood of Jesus shed for all at the cross, but few are chosen because they refuse the invitation and chose to stand in their own righteousness. We are all invited to the wedding feast. Those that chose to come by way of Christ are the welcome guests at the feast. The following verse makes it clear:

“Enter you in at the strait gate: for wide is the gate, and broad is the way, that leads to destruction, and many there be which go threat.”

“Because straight is the gate, and narrow the way, which leads to life, and few thereby that find it” (Matthew 7:13,114).

Jesus is the gate, or door, to enter the Kingdom Of God. Israel was invited (called) at the time of the Lord’s first advent and they refused to come to the Lord. They chose to reject their Messiah and have paid a heavy price for their rejection from then until now. The Bible tells us that at the Lord’s Second Coming all Israel will be saved. But they could have come to the Lord when He offered them the Kingdom 2000 years ago. We have the same invitation today! Many (all) are called, but few are chosen (few answer the call).

There will be an actual marriage feast in Heaven. It is Called the Marriage Feast of the Lamb as the following verse tells us:

“Let us be glad and rejoice and give honor to Him: for the marriage of the Lamb is come, and His wife (all the redeemed) has made herself ready.”

“Blessed are they which are called unto the Marriage Supper of the Lamb” (Revelation 19:7,9).

The Invitation stands. We are all called. Those chosen come by way of the Righteousness of Christ.

The Lord, just before His crucifixion, told His disciples that He would be leaving them but would return for all those that love Him and await His return. He died on the cross as a sacrifice for our sin and has gone to prepare a place for us so that we might be with Him where He is. He showed all of us that love Him His care for us with the following words:

“Let not your hearts be troubled: you believe in God, believe also in Me. In My Father’s House are many mansions: if it were not so, I would have told you. I go to prepare a place for you. And if I go to prepare a place for you, I will come again, and receive you to Myself; that where I am, you may be also” ( John 14:1-3).

His disciples were saddened by the Lord’s words regarding His leaving and the Lord knew that they would miss Him having walked with Him for three and a half years. For this reason, before he left them, the Lord promised them that another Comforter would come to be with them while He was gone. He was speaking of the Holy Spirit Who came on the Day of Pentecost to abide in all those that were believers from that day forward. Jesus said the following regarding the Holy Spirit:

” Howbeit when He, the Spirit of Truth, is come,, He will guide you into all truth” ( John 16:13).

The Lord has proven His love for us by dying on the cross for our sins, He has shown His care for us by His leaving us a comforter to watch over us, He has promised to come back for us. We don’t know when he will return, but because He has shown His great love and care for us this gives us great hope for His soon return. He also told us that He has great things being prepared for all those that love Him and await His return. The following lyrics from our introductory hymn give us some idea regarding some of the wonderful things that await us:

There’ll be no sorrows there. No more burdens to bear. No more sickness and no more pain. No more parting over there. But forever I will be with the One Who died for me. What a day, glorious day that will be!

It’s been almost 2000 years since the Lord made His promise to return for us. According to the Bible, it could be at any time. All believers down through the years have lived in anticipation of the Lord’s return. The Apostle Paul’s Epistle to Titus expresses the sure hope of all believers:

“Looking for that Blessed Hope, and the glorious appearing of the Great God and our Savior Jesus Christ” (Titus 2:13).

So, we see by this verse it’s called the “Blessed Hope” and all that love Him anxiously await His return. As has been mentioned; We know His return could come at any time, but does the Bible give us any indication on how this will happen? Yes, it does! The Lord has not left us to wonder about it. The Bible tells us exactly how the Lord will come back to take His church out of this world to be with Him. In the following verses from 1 Thessalonians, the Apostle Paul describes this event in detail:

“For this we say unto you by the Word of the Lord, that we which are alive and remain until the coming of the Lord shall not prevent (precede) them which are asleep (believers who have died).

“For the Lord Himself shall descend from Heaven with a shout, with the voice of the Archangel, and with the Trump of God: and the dead in Christ shall rise first: then we which are alive and remain shall be caught up together with them in the clouds, to meet the Lord in the air: and so shall we ever be with the Lord” ( 1 Thessalonians 4:15-17).

We have the Lord’s sure promise that He will return for us and that we will be with Him forever. He will come for us before the final judgment that is coming upon a world that has rejected His offer of forgiveness and life eternal. Today, if we hear Him calling out to us with a love that sent him to the cross for our sins, with a promise to provide comfort and direction through the Holy Spirit as we walk out our lives, and has told us that He will return for us so that we will be with Him forever; Shouldn’t His great love and care for us draw us to Him in repentance and faith. He has proven His love for us and it is not His will that any should perish. His coming will be “in a moment, in the twinkling of an eye,” and we will be changed as the following verses tell us:

“Behold I show you a mystery; we shall not all sleep, but we shall all be changed. In a moment, in the twinkling of an eye, at the last trump: for the trumpet will sound, and the dead will be raised incorruptible, and we shall be changed.”

“So when this corruptible shall have put on incorruption (Divine Nature), and this mortal shall put on immortality, then shall be brought to pass the saying that is written, death is swallowed up in victory” (1 Corinthians 15:51,54).

The Lord has gone to prepare a place for us and will return to take us to be with Him for eternity. Our mortal bodies will be changed to glorified bodies with no sin nature and with death defeated. What a truly glorious day that will be when my Jesus I will see !!!

And He Warned Of The Coming Flood Of Noah’s Time

“And Enoch lived sixty and five years, and begat Methuselah: And Enoch walked with God after he begat Methuselah three hundred years, and begat sons and daughters.”

“And all the days of Enoch were three hundred sixty and five years: and Enoch walked with God: and he was not; for God took him” (Genesis 5:21-24).

It is believed that Enoch was the first to hear from the Lord through revelations. It is said that he wrote 5 books, and these 5 books have been combined into one volume. The five books are: The Book of Watchers, The Similitudes, The Astronomical Book, The Book of Dreams, and the Epistle of Enoch. None of these 5 books became a part of the canon of scripture, and whether these were all written and passed down by Enoch is unknown, but we do know that Jude quoted him in the New Testament (Jude vs. 14), so we know that he did write some things that were passed down.

At sixty-five years of age it is thought that Enoch gave his heart to the Lord, or something significant happened to him at the time when he begat Methuselah. Methuselah’s name means “the deluge will be sent when he is dead.” This foretold the flood of Noah’s time.

It seems that the Lord gave Enoch great revelations at the time of Methuselah’s birth, or just prior to it. One of which was regarding the great flood that was to come upon the Earth and when it was to come. Noah was born 100 years after Enoch was translated by the Lord. Enoch’s son, Methuselah, would have certainly known Noah and Noah would have known of Enoch’s prophecy regarding the flood. Methuselah lived 969 years which is longer than any other person. Enoch’s prophecy of the flood, and that it would come when Methuselah was dead was certainly meant by the Lord as a warning of what would take place and when it would happen. We can see that it was also the Lord’s grace extended towards all those that were alive at the time.

Those alive at the time of the flood did not know how long Methuselah would live. so they did not know when the flood would come. Those living at that time lived very long lives and the fact that Methuselah lived longer than anyone else points to the Lord’s grace towards all those who were alive. Just as in the case of the flood of Noah’s time; the rapture of the church could come at any time. The rapture of the church is when the Lord returns for all believers whose hope is in His coming. Like those at the time of the flood, we do not know when the rapture will happen and the Lord’s grace is extended to all those today as it was then. The Lord is:

” …Longsuffering to usward, not willing that any should perish, but that all should come to repentance”. (2 Peter 3:9b).

The Lord instructed Noah to build the ark, and we know that outside of Noah’s family (8 people) no one headed Enoch’s warning. We also know that Noah preached to all that would listen during the period of time when the ark was being built. This is an example to us all today. All living today would be wise to heed the Lord’s warning of both the coming rapture of the church and His final judgment on this world in the final Great Tribulation.

So, we have two amazing stories in the fifth chapter of Genesis. The first is Enoch’s translation by God. Enoch walked with God three hundred years after he begat Methuselah and then the Lord took him; meaning he was translated without dying. There were only two men in scripture that did not die, but were taken by the Lord: Enoch and Elijah. Enoch’s faith in the Lord and his life of walking with God for three hundred years in a world that was corrupt and about to be judged by God is a good example for us in these end times as we witness wickedness increasing. We are to believe God and walk in faith believing in all that He has promised those that wait for His return.

The second amazing story is the warning of the coming flood in naming his son Methuselah which meant “the deluge will be sent when he is dead.” Methuselah was a living warning of the flood to come and his life showed forth the grace of God extended to anyone that would heed the warning and come to the Lord by grace. The year he died the flood came. The sad thing is that the Bible does not tell us that Methuselah himself came to the Lord. There isn’t any mention of it. We all must come to the Lord individually. If Methuselah did not place his faith in the Lord after seeing the faith of his father Enoch, and his very name prophesying the coming judgment, then it is a sad end to a life that had every opportunity to know the ways of God and receive His mercy and grace.

We are faced with similar circumstances. Our Lord came and died on a cross to pay the sin debt and show us the way to have forgiveness and fellowship with Him. We also know that a final judgment of God is coming. We, like those of Methuselah’s time, have been warned and have had the grace of God extended to us. The rest is up to us. Today is the day of salvation. Will we accept the forgiveness and grace of God, or will we like those at the time of Noah go about our daily business with no thought to the “flood” that is about to come upon the Earth?

“…….Choose for yourselves this day whom you will serve…..( Joshua 24:15).

The Book of Revelation identifies two men who will come down from God and shall be witnesses on the Earth at the last half of the seven-year Great Tribulation. Many think these two will be Enoch and Elijah, the only two men who were translated and did not die. The following is an account of these two witnesses ministry:

“And I will give power unto My two witnesses, and they shall prophesy a thousand two hundred and threescore days, clothed in sackcloth (preaching repentance). And if any man will hurt them, fire proceeds out of their mouth and devours their enemies: and if any man will hurt them, he must in this manner be killed” (Revelation 11:3,4,5).

“These have power to shut up Heaven, that it rain not in the days of their prophecy: and to have power over waters to turn them to blood, and to smite the earth with all plagues, as often as they will” (Revelation 11:6).

These two witnesses sent by God will warn all those living at the time of the coming judgment, and call all to repentance. The Bible says that when “their testimony is finished,” the Beast (the Antichrist) will kill them and their bodies will lay in the street of Jerusalem for three and a half days. Unbelievably, it says those that dwell on the earth will rejoice over their death and give gifts to each other because the two that had tormented them were dead.

“And after three days and a half the Spirit of the Lord entered into them, and they stood upon their feet. And they heard a great voice from Heaven saying unto them, come up hither. And they ascended up to Heaven in a cloud; and their enemies beheld them” (Revelation 11:11,12)

At the time of Noah, the Lord both extended His offer of grace and warned those that were alive for 969 years. Its been nearly 2000 years since the Lord’s first advent. He provides forgiveness and life eternal to all those that would come by faith and believe. He also warned of a final judgment that would come. Even until the end, the Lord sends witnesses, as we have seen in the Book of Revelation, to preach repentance and bring judgments in a last warning to all those on the earth. The Lord has done all He can to call all to repentance, but judgment is coming. As has been mentioned, it has been almost 2000 years.

“And you has He quickened, who were dead in trespasses and sins” (Ephesians 2:1).

There is nothing fallen man can do to save himself. As the title of this article states, dead is dead. Conversely, as believers, we don’t realize just how saved we are. We were dead spiritually and totally and completely lost, but now we are alive “in Christ” and completely and totally saved.

We were hopelessly lost and without God when He found us. The Holy Spirit drew us to Him. I have heard it said that so and so came to the Lord. This is not entirely accurate. We may have come to the Lord in repentance and faith, but it was the Holy Spirit that had to draw us to the Lord. When this happens; it is the greatest day of our lives!

Since the fall of man in the garden, sin has reigned in the lives of most of those born into this world. As has been stated, we cannot escape the clutches of the sin nature. We need to be rescued from our hopeless condition. The pride of man prevents most from admitting their need and coming to the One that loved us and died on the cross to pay the sin debt owed and rescue us from sure destruction.

The Lord has made a way for us and awaits our coming to the place where we admit our need and accept all He has done for us. Until we do this, we are spiritually dead. By our repentance and faith in His sacrifice at the cross, we are born again, or born spiritually. The Holy Spirit comes to dwell within us and we are a new creation.

“Therefore, if any man be in Christ, he is a new creature (a new creation): old things have passed away; behold, all things are become new” (2 Corinthians 5:17).

We are born from above by the precious blood of Jesus. By faith in Christ and Him crucified we walk out our new life. The Holy Spirit works in us to have victory over the sin in our lives and works in transforming us into the image of Christ. The Holy Spirit accomplishes this as we place our faith in Christ and His sacrifice on the cross. Our coming to the Lord in repentance and faith and our daily walk with the Lord is all by faith. Spiritually speaking the scriptures state that we were crucified with Him and raised to our new life.

“Know you not, that so many of us as were baptized into Jesus Christ were baptized into His death? Therefore we are buried with Him by baptism into death: that like as Christ was raised up from the dead by the Glory of the Father, even so, we should walk in newness of life” (Romans 6:3,4).

The Apostle Paul put it this way:

“I have been crucified with Christ: nevertheless I live; yet not I, but Christ lives in me: and the life I now live in the flesh I live by the faith of the Son of God, Who loved me, and gave Himself for me” (Galatians 2:20).

We have been blessed beyond anything we might imagine. At the moment we come by faith to Christ, we are accepted in the beloved, we become children of God and we have the assurance that we will spend eternity with the Lord. Again, the Apostle Paul says it best:

“But as it is written, Eye has not seen, nor ear heard, neither have entered into the heart of man, the things which God has prepared for them who love Him. But God has revealed them to us by His Spirit: for the Spirit searches all things, yes, the deep things of God” (1 Corinthians 2:9,10).

Yes, the Christian life is an exciting life. We are blessed by the Lord and have fellowship with Him. The Holy Spirit guides us, changes us to be more Christ-like, and imparts spiritual knowledge to us in our journey through this life. The Apostle Peter summed it up when He said the following regarding our walk with the Lord:

“Whom (Jesus) having not seen, you love; in Whom, though now you see Him not, yet believing, you rejoice with joy unspeakable and full of glory”

We serve a great God and have much to be grateful for. “But God, Who is rich in mercy, for His great love wherewith He loved us, even when we were dead in sins has quickened us together with Christ” (Ephesians 2:4,5). Yes, dead is dead, but God, in His love for us made a Way! And what a Way it is!!!

“Jesus said unto him, I Am The Way, the Truth, and the Life: no man comes to the Father, but by Me” (John 14:6).

In Fact, It Is Kept For You!

Just As I Am

As the new year approaches, many of us look to make changes in our lives – changes that will make our lives better. This coming year could be a time when we decide to make the best decision we could ever make to improve our lives not only for the present but for eternity. We can do this by placing our lives in the care of the One that loved us enough to give His life for us at Calvary. God asks only that we repent of going our own way and place our faith in the Lord Jesus and His great sacrifice for us at the cross. We are to depend on the Lord for all our needs.

We come to the Lord just as we are. We come in repentance and faith. When our faith is in the Lord the Bible tells us that we become a new creation. Our old life has passed away and everything becomes new. We receive the Holy Spirit Who indwells us as a “helper,” and we are changed by the power of God. The Holy Spirit will guide us into “all truth” as Jesus told His disciples just before His death. His sacrifice on the cross paid the sin debt and allowed the Holy Spirit to come in a new way. We are kept by the power of God by faith as the following verse says:

“Who are kept by the power of God through faith unto salvation ready to be revealed in the last time” (1 Peter 1:5).

We now walk out our life by faith in Christ and what He accomplished on the cross. Our salvation is through faith from first to last. We are saved by faith and we are kept and changed by faith as we serve the Lord in our daily life. We are called to “fight the good fight of faith,” meaning that we are to keep our faith in Christ and Him crucified. When we do this the Holy Spirit will work within us and we will be willing and able to do God’s will in our lives as the following verse states:

“For it is God (through the Holy Spirit) which works in you both to will and to do of his good pleasure” Philippians 2:13

So, as we look to the new year, let us decide to choose Christ this year instead of resolving to keep resolutions we know we have been unable to keep in the past. We come to the Lord believing that He paid the price for the sin debt, and we are changed. The Lord will make the changes in us that are needed. Our part is to believe. As the Word says, “We are kept by God through faith.” If you haven’t come to the Lord in the past; Won’t you place your life in the care of the Lord this new year? He will watch over you as no other would, and He is only a prayer away!

“Therefore, if anyone is in Christ, he is a new creation; old things have passed away; behold, all things have become new” ( 2 Corinthians 5:17).

A Christmas Message

“Therefore the Lord Himself will give you a sign; Behold, a virgin shall conceive, and bear a Son, and shall call His Name Immanuel” (Isaiah 7:14).

The above verse foretells the birth of the Lord Jesus Christ. The word “Immanuel” means “God with us.” We read in the Gospel of Matthew that the Angel of the Lord appeared to Joseph and said the following:

“And she (Mary) shall bring forth a Son, and you shall call His Name Jesus (Savior): for He shall save His people from their sins” (Matthew 1:21).

We celebrate the birth of Jesus at this time each year. He came to us as a babe in a manger, born of a virgin, and born in Bethlehem. The Old Testament Book of Micah foretold his birthplace and that He would be from everlasting, or in other words; “God with us” as the following verse from Micah states:

But you Bethlehem Ephratah, though you be little among the thousands of Judah, yet out of you shall He come forth unto me Who is to be ruler in Israel. Whose goings forth have been from of old, from everlasting” (Micah 5:2).

The Old Testament had many prophecies that foretold the coming of Jesus. And as we celebrate the birth of Jesus at this time each year; we also witness the beginning of an incredible story, also foretold, that resulted in the crucifixion and resurrection of the One that was born into this world specifically for that purpose. He came to die that we might live.

The miracle of the birth of the Lord Jesus Christ should be our focus as we celebrate Christmas this year. The Lord saw our need and left His home in glory to become man and dwell among us. This baby born in the manger in Bethlehem to a virgin was “God with us” and His coming was planned by the Godhead in eternity past as the following verse confirms:

“Who (Jesus) verily was foreordained before the foundation of the world, but was manifest in these last times for you” I Peter 1:20).

The Lord was foreordained by God to come as a babe in a manger to be our savior. He did it all for you and me. This Christmas with all the holiday cheer and with all the wonder and beauty of Christmas, let us remember that that baby Who was born was “God with us.” Isaiah says the following about the child that was prophesied to be born:

“For unto us a Child is born, unto us a Son is given: and the government shall be upon His shoulder: and His Name shall be called Wonderful, Counsellor, the Mighty God, the Everlasting Father, the Prince of Peace” (Isaiah 9:6).

He came that we might live. We must realize this and place our faith in the God that loved us and died on a cross to save us. He is our Savior and our Lord. Otherwise, If we miss the true meaning of Christmas; we miss out on the greatest gift we could ever receive! Yes, it is “God with us,” that we celebrate on Christmas. As Christians, the Lord is not only with us but He is in us as walk out our lives: “Christ in you, the hope of glory.” It doesn’t get any better than that! Look to Him this Christmas and you will be truly blessed!

A Christmas Poem

T’was the night before Christmas and all through the earth; people were greatly celebrating all because of a birth. A Savior had been born into the world in the past, and the salvation He offers it is hoped all would grasp. He offered His Life for those who would believe: all those who come by faith are those who receive. So, let us celebrate the true meaning and pray! Because He left His home in glory that all might be saved this day. (tq2021)
