Washed, Sanctified, and Justified

“…But you are washed, but you are sanctified, but you are justified in the Name of the Lord Jesus, and by the Spirit of our God” (1 Corinthians 6:13).
We have been washed or cleansed from all sin, by our faith in Christ and Him crucified. He took away all sin by His sacrifice on the cross for all those that come by way of faith. We have been sanctified which is our standing with God by what Jesus did. We have been justified which means we have been declared not guilty. Washed, sanctified, and justified the moment we came to the Lord. How amazing is our God? What great things He has done for us.
Our sanctification is positional. The Lord sees us as perfect because we have placed our faith in Christ and He sees us “in Christ.” We all know that we are not perfect. The Holy Spirit comes into us at the moment we are born again and begins His work to bring our condition up to our position. It is a lifelong work of the Holy Spirit and one in which we must cooperate.
We cannot sanctify ourselves. As has been stated, it is a work of the Holy Spirit. Our part is to place our faith in the Lord’s great work at the cross and do so daily. This is how the Holy Spirit works. He will not work in any other way. Our faith must be in the cross for Him to work in our lives. The following verse tells us that clearly:
“For the Law of the Spirit of life in Christ Jesus has made me free from the Law of Sin and Death” (Romans 8:2)
The Apostle Paul wrote the Epistle to the Romans. He is saying here, in this verse, that the “Law of the Spirit”, or how the Spirit works, is a law of God and that the Holy Spirit works only in the parameters of the finished work of Christ. We are freed from the “Law of Sin and Death” by faith in the finished work of Christ by the Holy Spirit.
If we place our faith in anything other than the cross, the Holy Spirit will be hindered in His work. He will try to help us as much as possible, but we will not find the victory over sin that we seek in our lives. We were born again by faith in Jesus and His sacrifice at the cross. We live our lives and are sanctified in the same way. Just before the Lord died on the cross He said “It is finished.” He came and died on a cruel cross to take away the “sin of the world.” Because of that great work, the Holy Spirit works in our life to take the sin away that “so easily besets us.” He has done it all. How great is our God?
“The Lord has done this, and it is marvelous in our eyes” (Psalm 118:23).
