Those Led by the Spirit Are the Children of God

“But as many as received Him (Jesus), to them gave He power to become sons of God, even to them who believe on His Name” (John 1:12).
I have heard it said that we are all children of God. As far as creation is concerned, that is true. But not all are children of God by a relationship with Him. We become children of God, with all its wonderful benefits, by placing our faith in Christ and His sacrificial death at Calvary. Jesus called it being “born again” or being “born of the Spirit” (John 3:3,6).
“The Spirit Himself bears witness with our spirit that we are the children of God: and if children, then heirs; heirs of God and joint heirs with Christ…..” (Romans 8:16,17).
The Bible tells us that those that have come to the Lord in repentance and faith are children of God now and that the Holy Spirit “bears witness” to that. The Holy Spirit abides within us if we are children of God and is constantly speaking to us. We are also heirs of God. What an amazing privilege! And we are not only heirs but joint heirs with Christ. All that is Christ’s is ours through our faith in His sacrificial work at Calvary. The Holy Spirit leads us as the following verse tells us:
“For as many as are led by the Spirit of God, they are the sons of God” (Romans 8:14).
The Holy Spirit leads us in our daily walk. He works exclusively through the finished work of Christ. As we make Christ and Him crucified the object of our faith, the Holy Spirit will work mightily in our lives. We are not to live by law or works, but by faith.
“For you have not received the spirit of bondage again to fear; but you have received the Spirit of Adoption, whereby we cry, ABBA, Father” (Romans 8:15).
If we attempt to live our lives by law or works of any kind, it will result in bondage. And bondage results in fear because we cannot live a life pleasing to the Lord in our own strength. It is impossible!! We are to walk by faith. We will do works such as the Christian disciplines (i.e. Bible reading, prayer, fasting, etc), but they are not to be the object of our faith. This will only result in us striving for victory in the wrong way.
“For you are all the children of God by faith in Jesus Christ. For as many of you as have been baptized into Christ have put on Christ” (Galatians 3:26,27).
We have been “baptized into Christ.” This is a spiritual baptism and not a water Baptism. Spiritually, we are baptized into His death, buried with Him, and raised in Newness of Life. He became our substitute and our faith in Him gives us all the benefits for which He died. We are children of God and joint- heirs because we have “put on Christ.” Jesus explains this in the following verse:
“At that day you shall know that I am in my Father, and you in Me, in I in you” (John 14:20).
Jesus was speaking about what would happen after the Resurrection and the coming of the Holy Spirit on the Day of Pentecost. He is speaking of His Divinity, “I am in the Father” and that we would be “in Him” by faith, and He would be in us to give us victory in our daily lives.
“..Christ in you, the Hope of Glory” (Colossians 1:27).
We are children of God today by faith in Christ and His sacrificial work at Calvary. We are heirs and joint heirs with Christ. We have the Holy Spirit within us to guide us and give us victory in our daily lives. The full realization of all the Lord has for us will come at the future Resurrection when we receive our glorified bodies. We are truly blessed by the Lord. What more could He have done. We were “lost and undone” as the words of the hymn tell us. And the Lord reached down and saved us from the sin that bound us. The Father loves us in spite of our fallen nature and sent His Son as a sacrifice for the sin of the world so that we might be forgiven and become the children of God. What love has God shown to us!!
“I will be a Father to you, and you shall be My sons and daughters, says the Lord Almighty” (2 Corinthians 6:18).

God Loves You!
