The Pearl of Great Price

“Again the Kingdom of Heaven is like unto a treasure hid in a field; the which when a man has found, he hides it, for joy thereof goes and sells all he has, and buys that field” (Matthew 13:44).
Our introductory verse is The Parable of the Hidden Treasure, one of the many Christ used to illustrate a spiritual truth. In this Parable, the Kingdom of Heaven is likened to God’s rule over those that willing submit to His way. The treasure is Christ through the New Covenant, with the field representing the world. So, God rules over the whole world and He offers the Kingdom of Heaven to all that pass through this world. It results in an eternity in His presence with all the blessings that that entails. Entry into the Kingdom is by faith in the One He sent to pay the price for our sins and open the way. That way is Christ, and Christ alone. Christ is of more value than anything we might have.
“Again, the Kingdom of Heaven is like unto a merchant man, seeking goodly pearls: who, when he had found one pearl of great price, went and sold all that he had, and bought it” (Matthew 13:45).
This is The Parable of the Pearl of Great Price. The Pearl in this parable represents Christ. A natural pearl cannot be improved on just as the Salvation the Lord has provided through Christ cannot be improved on, or added to. The man in this parable seems to be a man of some wealth and sells all he has to gain this Pearl of Great Price. We too must forsake all to gain Christ. This parable illustrates that knowing the Lord is of surpassing and ultimate value over anything else. Gaining the “Pearl of Great Price” means forsaking all else and coming in surrender to the love that led Christ to the Cross. His sacrificial death at Calvary was a finished work that cannot be added to. We come by faith in Christ crucified alone forsaking any and all trust in ourselves or anything the world has to offer.
“In Whom (Christ) are hid all the treasures of Wisdom and Knowledge” (Colossians 2:3).
All we have need of in our lives can be found in Christ. We are complete in Him. He is the treasure we have been searching for. We have forgiveness of sin and peace with God. We also have the peace of God which gives us peace within as we walk out our lives. The Bible says to “walk you in Him” (Colossians 2:6). We are complete in Him. Once we find this treasure, we will sell all to gain it. The Lord died on a cruel Cross to provide forgiveness and “Newness of Life” for us. When we have found this treasure we realize it is what we have been seeking all of our lives. Jesus paid the sin debt we owed and fulfilled the Law completely. We need only come to rest in His finished work. His work is complete and the treasure we seek is there for us. We need only believe and trust.
“…He (Jesus) said, It is finished (the sin debt has been paid and the Law fulfilled)” (John 19:30b cocommentary ESB).
Prayer Changes Things
“For the eyes of the Lord are on the Righteous, and His ears are open unto their prayers…” (1 Peter 3:12).
The Lord hears our prayers and is faithful to answer.
