If You Were to Face Death Today….

Shifting Our Focus to Things Eternal

“And it is appointed unto men once to die, but after this the judgment” (Hebrews 9:27).

Thinking about our death is not pleasant and for most something to be avoided. Being unsure of our eternal destination can make the fear of death very real. One day, we will all have to face death. What if that day was today. Would we be ready? Do we know what happens to us beyond the grave? These are important questions that must be addressed by us prior to that day. That is, if we want to be assured of an eternity that God has planned for those who love Him.

If we would stop to think about this future event in our lives it might give us pause in order to look into what God says about it. We all live busy lives and it’s easy to put this off until some future date, but what happens if that future date is today? If we have not prepared for this final journey, how can we be sure of where we will end up. Most consider their good lives, and the good things they have done, will result in a good outcome after death, but that is a false hope.

God has much to say about our eternal future in His Word, the Bible. It is His desire that we realize our great need for Him both in our daily lives, and in the eternal future that lies ahead of us. We must not put this off but seek His way in His Word. We must settle the isssue today for we dont know when that day will come. We can know for sure and have peace as that day approaches however far in the future we think it might be. We are only guaranteed today, and many have choosen to put off looking into God’s Word for the answer to their great loss. We have a sure hope when we trust in the Lord. The day will come when our future will be permanently decided. Regarding the Salvation of our soul, the Lord can be found by us up until this life ends.

“Seek the Lord while He may be found, call upon Him while He is near”  (Isaiah 55:6).

The Lord has provided a way, a guarantee of a good outcome upon our death. It’s called His Salvation plan and it was provided at great cost to the Father, and to the Lord Jesus. He sent His Son to die on the Cross to pay the sin debt that we might be forgiven and be welcomed into His presence on that future day when our time on the Earth has ended.  He requires us to place our faith in, and keep it in, Christ and His sacrificial death at Calvary. It is all by faith in God’s provision of Salvation.

We are dead in sins from the time of our birth. We will die in that condition if we do not come the Lord’s way. The Gospel is a call to repentance and faith, and it is a warning, and ultimatum, that all that come the way of this life will answer to the Lord. As our introductory verse tells us, “it is appointed unto men once to die,” meaning all will face that day and we must be prepared for it. The verse goes on to say, “but after this the judgment,” If we have come the Lord’s way and made Christ Savior and Lord in our lives then our sins were judged at the Cross and we will be welcomed into an eternity with the Lord. If not, all must face Christ as judge which will not end well for those that go this way.

Death is inevitable. If death would come to us today where would our eternal home be. We must at some point in our lives shift our focus to the Eternal. Sooner is better then later because the Christian life, walking with the Lord through all we face in this life, is the best life we can live. But if we do not answer the call of God in our lives then we have every reason to fear what lies ahead. The Lord is calling out to all those who will listen and heed His merciful loving call to come His way. We must NOT leave our eternity to chance. Our very familiar closing verse speaks of the Father’s love for those in the world, His giving of His only Begotten Son as a sacrifice that we might be saved, and how we can have this Salvation that He graciously offers. If you were to face death today ….. Have you made things right with the Lord?

“For God so loved the world, that He gave His only Begotten Son, that whosoever believes in Him should not perish, but have Everlasting Life ” (John 3:16).

Prayer Changes Things

“For the eyes of the Lord are on the Righteous, and His ears are open unto their prayers…” (1 Peter 3:12).

The Lord hears our prayers and is faithful to answer.
